Happiness is the highest from of health

Rap on Berries

Raspberries are available in red, gold, purple and black, but the reds are the most popular. Raspberries are low in calories, and sodium; they are an excellent source of vitamin C, and a good source of carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Red raspberries also contain manganese, copper and Vitamin K. The richly colored red raspberry is high in both antioxidants and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are defined by the American Cancer Society as plant compounds that include lycopene, resveratrol and carotenoids that are thought to have health protecting qualities.

The phytonutrients contained in raspberries aid in lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Though the research is continuing recent data indicates the potential for the fruit to play a role in obesity management.

Raspberries are delicate and should be gently washed in cool water and patted dry just before using them. They are more flavorful if allowed to come to room temperature before eating, rather than eating them as soon as they come out of the refrigerator.

Blueberries, labeled as one of the “superfoods” are also high in antioxidants including the phytonutrient anthocyanins. It is the anthocyanins that give the fruit the deep blue-purple color. The fruit is low in calories, sodium-free and a good source of vitamins C and K, manganese, fiber and copper.

Blueberry consumption is linked to antioxidant support, with a protective effect on the entire body in addition to the cardiovascular system. There is evidence that blueberries can protect the retina from damage from sunlight, and assist in maintaining the blood-sugar balance in people affected by type 2 diabetes or who are insulin resistant. Recent research indicates that consumption of blueberries may play a role in improving memory and delaying the onset of age-related cognitive problems.

As with raspberries, blueberries require gentle washing and patting dry just before using, they should be stored in the refrigerator. Blueberries can be frozen but for optimum nutrition content, fresh is best.

As for what’s cooking-fresh berry salads tossed with arugula and assorted baby lettuce plus toasted nuts; berries and cottage cheese or Greek-style yogurt; fruit smoothies made with almond milk; grilled pork tenderloin with blueberries or raspberries; whole-grain pizza spread with Greek-style yogurt, and toppings of thin-sliced ham and berries of course!

Clearest Sign of Mental Health

What is the clearest sign of mental health? Insight.

It’s like being in mental health inpatient facility. The main indicator psychiatrists are looking for. Can the person perceive reality? Are they delusional? Is there grandeur? Of course, the purpose for admitting people to these hospitals is to give them time and treatment to come back to reality – to receive insight.

It’s a scary individual that does not have insight. Yet, the narcissist is one who seems fine – until you get close to them – but has a major lack of insight. They cannot see a single fault within themselves. And they may only ultimately agree they have something to change when they see there is some advantage coming to them for appearing humble.

Now, this is dangerous; to see yourself as unequivocally superior to others is bad for everyone. You cannot be corrected when you need to be, and others are not acknowledged for the goodness and attributes they have.

The person who has insight, however, sees the faults inside themselves, and they have copious humility to be able to see the wrong, the error, the mistakes they make; that we all make from time to time. They’re not fearful of exposure because they see what is wrong and they see that it is straightforward to attend to it and fix it.

There’s the paradox in all its glory: the one who thinks they’re perfect is unimaginably dangerously imperfect, because they cannot see their fault, yet the one who sees their imperfections might as well be perfect, for human intents and purposes.

If you want to know if you’re healthy, do you have the capacity for honesty?

Can you see what you need to be able to see? Not just for yourself, but for others, too.

Now, we can see that there are maladies of anxiety and depression that express themselves in many ways, but do not manifest in a lack of honesty. Comparatively, mental health is less of an issue, even if there is a lot of pain the person must wrestle with. This is not to say that their mental ill-health is any less important. Indeed, many times people can suffer mental ill-health because someone close to them has had narcissistic impact on them.

People who suffer depression and anxiety can often still have good relationships. Even with comparative mental ill-health they may often operate in such a way that others are benefactors relationally. They may often find ways of loving well despite what they suffer, which is an incredibly inspiring reality.

We see here that good mental health is not just about the struggles we have living our lives; it’s also how we treat other people. A mental health that impacts negatively on other people is of grave concern, because of how people can be damaged. Of course, there is, on the other hand, also the matter of how suicide damages those left behind. That can never be understated.

Or, perhaps we can see it this way: the person who may have no pain but has troubled relationships, and indeed may appear to be happy, even powerful, may be more mentally ill than the person who endures much pain but who serves and loves others to the end of good relationships.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Thankfully, the horses and staff at a therapeutic riding center are only interested in providing support, compassion, a helping hand (or hoof) and education. The horses have no stigma about a person with mental health issues. The horses only want to know if you can learn their language. The horses know the right answer, a veteran just has to learn to ask the right question. Fortunately this is a language that a talented program director can teach brilliantly, with love and compassion for both the veteran and the horse.

Veterans participating in the program learn communication, patience, trust, mindfulness, respect and boundaries. These are all common themes at mental health programs. At a therapeutic riding center veterans are able to put them into practice in a more relaxed atmosphere where they are never made to feel wrong. The program staff and their horses teach veterans about mutual respect in the form of building a caring leader and partner relationship. These are things that many veterans in mental health programs have not experienced in a positive manner in years.

The caring staff allow the veteran to learn in a safe environment, with powerful majestic animals that give honest feedback because a horse has no ulterior motives. They will communicate in powerful and subtle ways, asking questions, giving answers, but never judging whether the veteran is wrong or right. Each action is not positive or negative, but merely a response to the input the horse is receiving. Veterans learn the importance of establishing boundaries, as a horse will test their leadership. Horses seek a leader, someone to respect, someone to protect the herd. It always seems the right horse finds the right veteran to provide that leadership. As veterans learn to earn the horses respect it gives the veteran a feeling of accomplishment, achievement and pride. Maybe a feeling that they haven’t felt in years. It helps restore a sense of dignity. They leave their session with a smile on their face, standing a little taller and a little straighter.

At a therapeutic riding center veterans find compassion, support, guidance, and gentle direction. They find a place where they can heal. They find a place without the stressors of an inpatient mental health system. A place where they can express their emotions with the beautiful creatures that provide honest and supportive feedback. There is a sense of calm and peace about the center, its staff, and the horses who are so beautifully trained to provide therapeutic support.

Tips To A Fitter And Healthier

Drink More Water

If you want to live a healthy lifestyle drinking more water should be high on your list of priorities. Keeping your body hydrated reduces the feelings of hunger, helps cleanse and detox your body from unwanted chemicals, keeps your skin hydrated and is much better for you than any other drink on the planet.

Water has zero calories so you can drink as much as you like without having to worry about sugar intake or putting on any weight. A good idea is to replace your soft drinks with water and drink water with your meals, it can aid in digestion.

So there are lots of good reasons to drink some more “H2O”.

Eat Smaller Portions

One of the biggest reasons why people get over-weight and unhealthy is because they eat huge portions sizes. I have seen many people in restaurants with plates so full of food it has been literally piled high! This is not a healthy way to go with your food.

Reducing your portion sizes can help you with reducing the calories you eat and can help you keep check on your weight. If you still feel hungry after your meal drink another glass of water or eat some fruit.

If you still think that eating smaller portion sizes just won’t help you then why not add a bowl of salad to your meal? Then you have something healthy and extra to add which should help to fill you up.

Eat More Often

Smaller portion sizes allow you to eat more often and eating more often can help to speed up your metabolism. If your metabolism is increased then your body can burn off more fat because – the reason this works is simple, when you go on a diet it typically means starving your body of calories and if you suddenly reduce your calories your body will react by going into what is called starvation mode and will begin to store fat on your body. This is a survival mechanism.

To stop this from happening you have to let your body know that there is no food shortage and you can easily do this by eating more often. This of course doesn’t mean you can eat more chocolate cake or more desserts. You can replace those snacks that you enjoy with fruit and nuts.

Increase your food intake by choosing healthy options and snacks, add a bowl of salad to every meal and drink lots more water.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

We are a society which is addicted to sugar, we have sugar with most meals that we eat, it is added to lots and lots of foods to sweeten it up, it is added to fizzy drinks, sauces, soup and is coated on most morning cereals.

Sugar puts more calories into our bodies, it turns into fat if you don’t exercise enough to burn those calories off and that’s not to mention the damage that is doing to our teeth.

So what can we do to reduce our sugar intake? That is what the next tip is about.

Eat More Fruit and Vegetables

Instead of eating processed foods you should strive to each more vegetables. They are low in calories, have a high water content which helps hydrate our body and are full of vitamins and minerals which help your body to stay healthy and active.

Eating more fruit will also give your body lots more vitamins. You can and should replace sugary snacks with fruit. There are so many options to choose from when it comes to fruit there is really no excuse not to be eating more of it.

Kinesio Taping

Kinesiotaping.com describes the Kinesio Taping® Method as a “rehabilitative technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints, without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.” Benefits of KTex® Tape include that it is Latex-free and wearable for up to several days at a time. It is also safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and when utilized properly successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, and neurological conditions. KTape does this by targeting different receptors within the somatosensory system which allows the tape application to alleviate pain

I recently had the pleasure of utilizing KTape applications, in conjunction with rehabilitation exercises, to assist a patient in obtaining a significant increase in sensory perception, range of motion, and function following an acute trauma induced case of drop wrist. The clinical application response was astounding. Following six weeks of traditional physical therapy the patient continued to experience a severe deficit in range of motion, strength, and sensation. She came to me essentially with little to no improvement and a whole lot of hope for better than what she was being told. Realizing none of her therapies included post treatment sensory input. My idea was to perform range of motion therapy in conjunction with electrical stimulation to essentially “wake up” the radial nerve and utilize the kinesio tape post therapies to afford constant sensory input. I hoped to create therapy input longevity as with enough active input and additional passive input this may allow the affected nerve to regain activity thus function. Following the first manual therapy I applied kinesio tape along the extensors of the wrist, with a 25% stretch. This was to see if KTaping was a viable option. Her following visit she explained for the first time since starting any treatment she had felt “sensation” in her hand and lower arm. I perceived this as a positive response and began an aggressive drive for therapy and rehabilitation.

Six weeks later, several various strategic applications of KTape to promote wrist, finger, thumb, and appropriate forearm motion and sensation she presented to her specialist. The patient’s improvement at that time was estimated at 60%. Her doctor ordered six more weeks of therapy. After six weeks of aggressively rebuilding the neuromusculoskeletal communication aspects again of her wrist, hand, and thumb, kinesio tape was used throughout the patient’s therapy. I utilized kinesio tape throughout the patient’s therapy as a means of providing constant neuromuscular feedback with the intention of reinforcing therapy.

I am happy to say this patient I share about has seen her specialist again and has been graded at 95% capacity with long term residuals of slightly diminished sensation and the highly likely occasional flare up of the accommodating muscles and joints with increased use. Of course KTape will be ready for that.

To see and utilize the Kinesio Taping technique first hand is nothing short of phenomenal. Kinesio Taping® certainly has come a long way since starting as a twinkle in Dr. Kase’s brain in 1973. It also appears to have a bright future in the clinical setting.

Dr. Windy Foust is a graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic and a licensed Arizona chiropractor. At a young age she had experienced rotator cuff damage that would traditionally require surgery. She was unable to seek traditional medical attention thus learned to live with the pain and restriction. Her personal pain and restriction eventually lead her in pursuing treatment options that were non invasive and effective. This experience gives her passion is to help those with joint pain and restrictions achieve relief and to ultimately get their lives back. She does this by applying various non invasive techniques, such as kinesio tape, in treatments for her patients with such conditions as shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, and ankle pain and mobility restriction or instability.

Live With A Challenging Illness

To give you a simple explanation, my conscious mind and my unconscious mind blended into one mind. The critical faculty of my conscious mind stopped functioning and the logical part of the mind was suppressed also. My reality didn’t correspond with the reality of my surroundings. It was like not being awakened from a deep scary dream. There was nobody around who could actually help me with my situation. My partner was frantically driving us around, hoping to find the right healer that would know how to get me back to earth. After many varied attempts of renowned spiritual healers, there was no other option but to admit me to the intensive care unit of a hospital.

After spending several days in hospital and being medicated to the brim I reemerged back into what could be called the ‘former self’. Yet I was forever changed. There was no going back. What firstly seemed like a one of event soon became a regular nightmare. In the space of several months, I was readmitted back to hospital. The doctors told me that I had a mental illness and gave me somewhat shaky diagnosis and medication to take.

I knew better. This could not be any illness. Well, in my eyes I was undergoing spiritual transformation that unfortunately didn’t go as well as planned. However, my understanding of the situation was of no help to me. After several hospitalizations and change of diagnosis I learned to appreciate the medical viewpoint. I saw that what I had been experiencing was indeed called mental illness. That nevermind the way it started, the symptoms that I now had were typical and well documented for a mental illness.

Living a fairly long time in denial and rebellion against the prescribed medication I obviously was not able to deal with it by myself. I learned that I did need the medical help. It was a reality that I had to accept. I had an ongoing problem that needed to be worked on.

While I later accepted the fact that this was not a temporary issue, I still resisted the fact that I needed to be on medication to function and stay away from the hospital. It took me very long time to realize the medication might really have been helping me to stay well and that I would be taking it even after I was discharged from hospital. It now became part of my new life reality.

Life has a funny way of dealing with our dreams. I (and nobody that ever knew me) had never before imagined that I would be once diagnosed as mentally ill. However, as this is now a part of my life experience, I embrace it. The diagnosis is not WHO I AM. Although it’s now part of my reality. This situation taught me to see a new meaning to my life.

To embrace and accept the verdict and to learn from it and its many hospitalizations to be able to help others understand.

The one learning that I have from it is that we are all living life with a conditioned programming of our reality. Most of us can’t see life for what it really is. Many times we are not living our true purpose, but only surviving until the paycheck.

My life showed me a different perspective. One of my many life purposes is to shine a light on the so-called mental illness and what it represents for the individual and it’s surroundings. How we are all the same, yet have a different internal worlds. How we see ourselves and how we believe others are seeing us.

Having studied several mind focusing modalities, such as NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Psychosomatic Therapy, Hypnotherapy & Life Coaching, I have a broader understanding and unique perspective to guide me in my life.

My life is different from yours in many ways. Your story is unique to you. However, I hope my story and viewpoint might encourage you to look on the bright side of life. Everything that happens in our life can be seen as an opportunity for growth. Once we distill the meaning and purpose of the situation we become empowered by it.

The reason why I shared this very personal story was to show you we all have individual challenges that we need to learn to deal with. There is greater meaning in this life journey and you have only to discover it.

Enjoy the journey and stay strong through challenges.

ADHD in Adults

Perhaps you remember it back when it was termed as ADD – a label that had been presented to kids who found it challenging to adhere to the rules or be aware in class. Even though the condition is far more common in teenagers and youngsters, the indications of ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can continue through into adulthood and continue for a good life.

From reputed authorities, it is stated that some people with ADHD exhibit fewer symptoms as they age, though others will continue to experience major symptoms that will affect their daily functioning. It was published that many adults with ADHD aren’t even aware they have it. On the other hand, they merely recognize that their day to day activities can be a challenge.

Until quite recently, scientists believed children would outgrow ADHD during adolescence, due to a number of developmental changes that happen in their brain chemistry. However, they now think that 7 out of 10 children with ADHD can become adults with ADHD.

Based on a few studies, the symptoms of ADHD in adults include difficulty in paying attention, restlessness, and impulsiveness. Adults with ADHD might fight to priorities and concentrate. This could lead to frequent cases of forgotten meetings, missed deadlines, or social plans. The lack of ability to control impulses ranges from impatience driving in traffic or waiting in line to outbursts of anger and mood swings. The internet site lists the following as the common signs of adult ADHD:

  • Poor time management skills
  • Problems prioritizing and general disorganization
  • Problems multitasking or concentrating on an activity
  • Low tolerance for frustration
  • Excessive restlessness or activity
  • Hot temper
  • Poor planning
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Trouble handling stress
  • Problems completing tasks or following through

At some time or the other, just about everyone has struggled with ADHD like symptoms. In the event, you’re finding it difficult being an adult, while we all do sometimes. How would you tell whether it’s normal or a sign of a fundamental mental illness like ADHD?

To know for sure, qualified professionals must diagnose such types of health disorders, which can take a lot of time. It would generally involve a vacation to the GP at the earliest, and a comprehensive evaluation from a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

You ought to be diagnosed if the symptoms are severe enough to possess a continued impact on one or more areas of your life (dating life and work) and in case some disruptive or persistent symptoms may be traced straight back to the early childhood.

It can be very difficult in order to identify ADHD in adults because there are certain symptoms that are like those brought about by other difficulties like mood disorders and anxiety. That’s where all this gets more complicated – more of a “what came first, the egg or even the chicken” sort of situation.

Nonetheless, those with ADHD, are more likely to have personality disorders and other psychological conditions, including mood disorders or anxiety. They are generally prone to unknowingly have a problem with the condition for long periods.

ADHD Affects the calibre of life of the individual

Those with ADHD might find it hard to have a job or maintain good relationships, given that they have trouble staying on the ‘9 to 5’ lifestyle or possibly a routine. If ADHD was not dealt with during childhood, they could have probably done poorly in school too.

Because the person has got to grapple using this behavioural disorder for a lifetime, it often means that they’ll have low self-esteem. Some individuals with ADHD turn to alcohol or drugs, thus making an attempt to manage their feelings of failure or frustration.
