Food Choices vs Nutritional Sabotage

Are our healthy clean eating diets helping us, or are they creatine nutritional mayhem. Let’s talk about a few examples.

No carb: the Go To diet for a very long time.

A few points.

The Moderation study: Dr Sara Seidelmann, clinical and research fellow in cardiovascular medicine from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, led the research. The study of more than 15,400 people in the US found that diets both low and high in carbohydrates were linked with an increase in mortality, while moderate consumers had the lowest risk of mortality.

These findings were confirmed in a meta-analysis of studies ( study of hundreds of other studies combined) including over 432,000 people from more than 20 countries. Bottom line results:

Average life expectancies for 50-year-olds:

Moderate carbohydrate intake – additional 33 years

Very low carbohydrate intake- 29 years

High carbohydrate intake – 32 years

Nutritional sabotage? an excellent example here. The millions of people who do not eat carbs for instant gratification of weight loss – these studies seem to confirm nutritional sabotage, albeit the very best intentions.

Again – we have to define a carb – of course we are not referring to and excuse for pizza & pasta parties, chips, junk food. That’s another form of nutritional sabotage. When we say carbs – we are referring to fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes & beans…

Brain food: Our brains consume up to 20% of the energy used by the entire human body, more than any other organ. The brain is about 2% of body weight, but receives 15% of the cardiac output and uses 20% of the total body oxygen consumption. Rather needy organ! The brain uses about 25% of the total body glucose (from carbs) utilization. Junk carbs are terrible for the brain in a number of ways (oxidative stress and inflammation), yet those good carbs we are talking about are vital. The body can use ketones (from a deprivation of good carbs) as an energy source… let’s just say not a preferred source, another full topic unto itself.

Dairy: Another popular belief is to eliminate dairy. Truthfully, I was devastated when Canada removed dairy from the food guide. I am all for getting people to eat more legumes, plant based foods. Fact is like other foods, moderation is key. Dairy is still an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, protein, micronutrients… supports bone growth, hormone production, a very long list. I do not think it is realistic for children to eat enough legumes, oily fish to compensate. Dairy is also, according to numerous studies, to have a role in diabetes prevention. Once again – we are saying moderation – and we are not talking bowls and bowls of sugary fatty ice cream, 18% cream in our coffee… But a bowl of greek yogurt has endless nutritional benefits – including a natural food source of probiotics (mix in some oatmeal for the prebiotics), protein and precious enzymes, coenzymes and micronutrients. And please, don’t fool yourself about giving your kids calcium from those chocolate spreads…

There are benefits to being a vegetarian – if people are doing it properly – and not living on a diet of pasta and potatoes. Are they eating fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits & vegetables? With many people – being vegetarian is nutritional sabotage, they frequently are low in B12, calcium and the iron in vegan foods is not as easily absorbed by the body as the iron from animal sources – there is a real skill necessary for a healthy vegan or vegetarian diet. However, eliminating all animal products from the diet increases the risk of certain nutritional deficiencies. From the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: “Micronutrients of special concern for the vegan include vitamins B-12 and D, calcium, and long-chain n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids. Unless vegans regularly consume foods that are fortified with these nutrients, appropriate supplements should be consumed. In some cases, iron and zinc status of vegans may also be of concern because of the limited bioavailability of these minerals.”

I recently did an interview with Dr. Ross Grant, on the importance of NAD to lower oxidative stress, which can lead to chronic inflammation, in our diets, NAD is a coenzyme our bodies can assemble. However, we need to assure our body is getting the precursors it needs to manufacture the NAD: Yeast, niacin, Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) from cow’s milk, fish, chicken… what happens if we eliminate certain food groups?

Points to ponder… its not just about popping a multivitamin for vitamins and minerals that might be missing in our diets. I would hate to see children depending on Flintstone vitamins more than a respect for a healthy diet. There are hundreds of more examples here. Our bodies are a symphony of chemical reactions, fuelled by enzymes and coenzymes we need to assemble. Food and exercise are our very best medicines. Exercise needs to be efficiently fueled too. Don’t just look at the immediate results – look at the longer picture of health. Make sure your best intentions are not nutritional sabotage, depriving yourself of health.

Mistake In Sugar Addiction

First was my Mindset Mistake: I resisted the idea of having to give up sugar. Yes, I knew I was addicted to it but was sure I wouldn’t have to quit.

Second was my Attitude Mistake: I started looking for loopholes. Believe me, no one ever looked harder for a sugar loophole than I did, so I can say with confidence there isn’t one. But I didn’t believe that back then!

Third was my Behavior Mistake, which of course was a direct outgrowth of the first two: I used Sneaky Sugars. A new and popular item at that time was “all fruit” jelly – as if that wouldn’t have an addictive effect on me. I’d buy and eat it by the jarful. Another was a fake ice-cream-type dessert that had me at “hello” – hooked on the first spoonful.

Yikes.

Many trending sugars are available now, showing how sneaky the food industry can be, along with some old faithful entries: agave, coconut sugar, maple syrup, honey – and Organic Sugar. ‘Cause that doesn’t affect the brain; it’s organic… !

If I could start all over, I’d be more Zen about sugar: No attachments. No aversions.

I’d accept that my addiction meant needing to give up sugar – and give it up much sooner.

I’ve never regretted quitting sugar but do regret the time I wasted – and the frustrations I caused myself – by not facing my addiction to it for real, once and for all. No one knew this stuff back then.

Instant Drug Test

This test may screen for only one illegal drug like opiates or marijuana but some of them test for several drugs at the same time. An instant drug test may feature parameters or panels, which will tell how many substances the test will screen for. Some of the common instant tests are five panel, ten panel, and three panel. The test that is considered more comprehensive is the ten panel. It will screen for about ninety-five percent of all illegal drugs. This includes methamphetamines, marijuana, opiates, and cocaine.

These drug tests can be done in different ways but the one that is used the most is the urine instant drug test. When it screens the person’s urine, it screens for the metabolites in the urine and not the presence of any particular drug. These metabolites exist only because of a drug that a person might be using. These can test a person’s blood, hair, saliva, and even sweat, too.

In addition to testing for illegal drugs, these tests can also test for recent alcohol consumption. A BreathalyzerĀ® is a form of an instant drug test for alcohol. It uses a sample of a person’s breath to determine their blood alcohol content. There are blood and urine tests that screen for alcohol in the body along with alcohol strips. These are put in the mouth to identify if the person has drunk alcohol.

The time a drug can be detected accurately is called the detection period. These time periods vary with each illegal drug because each illegal drug is metabolized at different rates by the body. Marijuana is detected in the urine up to thirty days after smoking it. This is because it is stored in the fat cells of your body and takes longer to purge. Being a water-soluble substance cocaine is usually out of your system within seventy-two hours after using.

An instant drug test makes it harder to get a job and helps prevent employers from paying workers compensation for accidents due to the employee being under the influence of illegal drugs.

Essential Oils for Asthma

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus’s strong scent opens up the congested airways of the lung. Eucalyptol, a chemical that breaks up mucous and phlegm, is the active ingredient in this oil that enables asthmatics to breathe easily. It’s great to inhale this oil through steam. Add a few drops of the oil to warm water, either in a pot or steam inhaler. Gently lean over and breathe it in (you may even want to place a towel over your head to get the full effect). This will expand the constricted airways.

Also a great one to use if you have a cold or flu!

Frankincense

Frankincense oil is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory properties. It eliminates congestion from the nasal passageways and lungs.

An added bonus is that this oil combats nervousness, anxiety and stress. If you’re feeling stressed too, this may be one you want to use.

It’s great as a chest rub – adding a few drops of the oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil, and apply! Or add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe in the scent.

Oregano

Oregano oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. This oil is also used to keep away colds and flu. A good use of this oil is to create a mist spray. Add 25 drops of oregano oil to 5 ounces of water, and use as needed to relieve symptoms.

Thyme

Thyme oil is an expectorant, with both antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is thought to boost immunity and strengthen the respiratory system. It fights cold, cough and all symptoms associated with asthma. It’s great used in steam or vapor therapy to ease breathing and reduce wheezing.

Clove

This oil has effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties that allow it to combat asthma. Do not apply clove oil directly to your skin. If you would like to use it as a chest rub, ensure that it is diluted with a carrier oil first.
