They lie about things – addicts will start investing some time in their newfound addiction. As a result, they may begin lying about where they have been. Also, they may even begin lying about where all their money goes, especially when it concerns the family budget. The thing about lying is that at some point explanations don’t add up. It is at this point where action must be taken. Family members and loved ones of an addict must not allow themselves to get caught in a web of lies, as this will usually lead to delayed help for the addict.
They change their habits – over time people usually establish some routine in their life. They like specific hobbies and do some activities that bring them joy. Once they develop an addiction, these patterns begin to change. An addict no longer feels excited about hobbies, nor invests the same effort in activities that used to be key. Shaking off an addiction often returns the person on the right track and them getting back to these once joyful hobbies is part of the process.
They may become aggressive – addiction hits people in many different ways. One of them leads them to become more aggressive towards others. Surprisingly, this behaviour is shown even towards loved ones, which often comes as a shock. It too should serve as an indication that something is wrong. As part of this change, an addict may shift the blame towards others. Whether it is other family members, friends or coworkers, they will use every opportunity to withdraw from them, mostly devoting more to the addiction itself.
They become depressed – this side effect of addiction doesn’t manifest in everyone, but it is still a common one. The main thing about depression is to rule out any other reasons behind it. Stress and a wide range of other factors play a negative role in a person’s mental health. Therefore, it is essential to differentiate from these factors and the addiction that causes depression.
